Clinical Exercise

Published: January 29, 2021

Clinical exercise is individualised and structured exercise with inspirations from Pilates led by a qualified professionals and Physiotherapists. Under the supervision of a Physiotherapist, clinical exercise can be completed in a safe and effective manner, providing confidence and support for clients.

Pilates is used for variety of reasons ranging from rehabilitation of a specific injury, maintenance of overall fitness, or prevention of injury. Physically, clinical exercise improves posture, strength, flexibility and mobility. Mentally, clinical exercise helps release endorphins responsible for reducing anxiety, depression and improving general well-being.

Originally named 'Contrology' by creator Joseph Pilates, the main principle of Pilates is that the mind itself controls the body. Hence, Pilates is widely used for development of motor control which is the ability to initiate and direct muscle contractions as desired. Even though Pilates is low impact and focused on slow breath-controlled movements, exercises are made progressively challenging by adding resistance on the reformer or increasing involvement of the arms or legs on the mat.

So, clinical exercise may be dressed down, dressed up or a combination of both by adding or removing equipment. You may use mats, reformers and the trapeze table to achieve your results regardless of your initial level of fitness.

To get started, your Physiotherapist will first conduct a 1:1 assessment and consultation to prescribe specific exercised that target your problem areas and align with your goal of rehabilitation, maintenance or prevention. As every individual has different movement patterns and specific target areas, specific exercises are chosen for you to maximise your results while also minimising the risk of injury or flare-up.
