Pump Your Muscles and Boost Your Immunity!

Published: May 22, 2020

Have you ever felt like you were on top of the world after that 5K run or that super difficult online Pilates class even though you were secretly (or, not so secretly) sweating like a beast? Although the happy hormones known as endorphins were being released, you were also boosting your immunity with exercise!

Specifically, research has shown that regular exercise increases the number of anti-inflammatory molecules circulating in our body while also reducing the number of pro-inflammatory molecules. Further, regular exercise reduces the amount of fat surrounding our organs, thereby reducing tissue surface area for the pro-inflammatory molecules to attack. Together, these reactions assist the body with its natural defense mechanisms against foreign bodies responsible for conditions like the common cold or flu.

However, too little or too much exercise may increase inflammation, causing a state of potential immunosuppression in the body. So, it is important to engage in just the right amount of exercise. A recent article exploring the relationship between infection and exercise supports regular bouts of moderate intensity exercise of 45 minute sessions among adults and older adults, with or without chronic disease. According to the World Health Organisation, moderate intensity includes brisk walking, dancing and carrying or moving loads up to 20 kg.

Other important factors to boost immunity include good sleep hygiene, a well-rounded and nutritious diet, and appropriate stress management. With COVID-19, strategies like these are essential to your overall well-being, and the staff here at Back in Motion Braybrook are happy to help guide and refer you as necessary.
