Mat’s Top Tips for a Day Hike

Published: June 5, 2019

Victoria has some absolutely beautiful countryside and trails just begging to be explored although most of us rarely get out there and experience what our own backyard has to offer. I have always been a ‘social’ runner and to be honest have found it pretty boring running on footpaths, but I drag myself to do it due to the health benefits. Over the past 2 years though I have started getting into more trail running and hiking and have found you get an even better workout (usually more hills) plus get some stunning views to go with it. There are numerous points to consider before jumping into the trails and here are some top tips to consider:

  • Personal safety – This should never been understated. When you are out on tracks there are multiple risks involved, a few key things to ensure are:
    • Research where you are going – trails can all look very similar and losing your bearings is easier than you think. Have a map with you in case you need it.
    • Have some basic first aid supplies – e.g. snake bite bandage.
    • Go with a friend (always more enjoyable as well).
    • Notify a family member/friend back home where you are going and estimated time to get back.
    • Have plenty of water and food (extra for in case you get lost).
    • Have some warmer clothes with you – it can be quite warm whilst you are moving however if something happens to you and you need to sit and wait your body temperature can drop rapidly leading to hyperthermia.
  • Take your time and soak in the scenery. It can be easy to run/hike along trails with your head down getting the correct foot position for every step avoiding rocks, make sure every now and then you stop, look around and appreciate where you are! Snap some pictures along the way too.
  • Know your own fitness/experience level – when starting out make sure you ease into things with only a small trail/route planned. You can build to bigger and better things once you get used to being on the tracks and your physical and mental fitness have adapted.
  • A warm up walk/jog on even ground or stretching before you start can prep the body for whats ahead.
  • Leave no trace!! To keep the trails natural and beautiful we want to make sure you leave them as you find them. This includes:

    • Everything you take in, take out with you.
    • Do not disrupt any trees/plants/shrugs.
    • Respect any wildlife you encounter.
    • Minimise any impact on the environment.

Most importantly then is to have fun!!
