“Have you been experiencing some outer knee pain when you run? Is the pain worse when you are running downhill? It is possible that what you are experiencing is Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)!

With the closure of many local gyms, many people have turned to running as a form of exercise to keep fit and active. However, often people tend to increase their training volume (either running distance or intensity) too quickly for their body to handle. This is when an overuse injury, such as ITBS, can occur. The pressure of the ITB against the outside of the knee through the repeated motions of running can cause irritation and inflammation in the area. This is why pain is typically felt on the outside of the knee.

With an incidence rate of 14% in the running population, it is important to get on top of this early before it begins to your running. The best way to settle your ITBS is to engage in an individualised stabilisation and strengthening program with an eventual return-to-running program. These will be developed based off comprehensive assessments of lower limb biomechanics, stability and strength.”
