Ingrown Toenails

Published: June 14, 2022

What is it?

Ingrown toenails occur when the corner or side of the toenail grows into the surrounding flesh, causing pain, discomfort, inflammation and sometimes infection if left untreated.

What causes an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenails generally develop due to one or a combination of the following:

  • Incorrect toenail cutting technique
  • Ill fitting footwear
  • Trauma
  • Natural toenail shape/structure e.g. curved, broad, thickened toenails

How we can help

Our podiatrists can help you by carefully removing the offending toenail edge/spike using sterilised equipment, apply antiseptic and dress the affected toe.

Education regarding after care will be provided and we may refer you to your doctor for antibiotics if necessary. Long standing ingrown toenails may not respond well to conservative treatment. In this case, our podiatrists may recommend a minor surgical procedure to permanently remove the offending toenail edge/spike.

If you are experiencing an ingrown toenail, give us a call or book online today for an assessment.
