Cupping in Remedial Massage: Benefits and techniques

Cupping therapy is an ancient practice which has gained recognition and popularity in modern day treatments. It is a therapeutic approach involving the application of cups to the skin creating a vacuum or suction effect. While most massage techniques used apply pressure toward the targeted tissue, cupping has the opposite effect, drawing the target tissue up. There are different types of cupping and many benefits from this type of treatment.

Benefits of cupping in remedial massage

Pain relief: Cupping can alleviate pain by releasing muscle tension.

Improved circulation: Cupping stimulates blood circulation, which can aid in the healing of injured tissues and reduce inflammation.

Relaxation: Many people find cupping deeply relaxing. It can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Types of cups

Vacuum/Suction cupping: This method involves placing the cup on the skin and using a pump to remove some of the air and draw up the target tissue.

Flame Cupping: A flame is used to warm the air inside the cup before it is placed on the skin. The suction is created as the air inside the cup cools and this draws up the target tissue.

Silicone Cupping: This is a more modern style of cupping. The flexible silicone cup is squeezed to remove air then places on the skin creating a gentle suction.

Techniques

Static cupping: This is when the cup is placed over the target tissue and left in place for a period of time. Static cupping promotes blood circulation and relaxation of muscle tissue. It can leave circular marks on the skin which typically fade within a week.

Gliding/dynamic cupping: This technique involves applying massage oil or cream to the skin before placing the cups. Once the cup is in place, the therapist glides the cups along the skin in a controlled manner. Gliding cupping is particularly useful for areas of large muscle groups, such as the back or thighs. It effectively decreases muscle tension and improves circulation.

When to avoid cupping

Cupping should not be used over wounds, cuts or irritated skin. Individuals with severe illness, fever, a bleeding disorder or taking blood thinning medications should avoid cupping. Treatments are not generally recommended during pregnancy, and you should always consult with a healthcare professional. It is always important to discuss the treatment and contraindication with a qualified therapist to determine if this is suitable.

Cupping therapy can be a valuable addition to your wellness routine. It is a great technique to help you achieve relaxation, pain relief and improve overall health.
