Keep your bones strong! Lift some weights!

Published: August 30, 2022

Did you know that strength training with weights can help to make your bones stronger? A lot of people think strength training only builds big muscles, but we now know this is not the case.

After the age of 40, your bone mass decreases at a steady rate. Of particular concern is the onset of osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and fragile. This results in susceptibility to fractures later in life. This can be extremely debilitating.

Research shows that strength training can slow down bone mass loss and, in some cases, even increase bone mass. When bones are stressed with strengthening exercises, the body reacts to strengthen the bones.

Our physiotherapists can help you formulate a tailored strengthening exercise program that can target the bones and joints that are more highly susceptible to osteoporosis. We understand that strength training may be new to a lot of people, that is why our physiotherapists will run through your exercises to make sure they are at a comfortable level for you.
