Stay Motivated Through The Winter

Published: July 26, 2022

The Melbourne winter is definitely the culprit of causing us to feel bleak and weak. However, with the right tools, you can successfully overcome it.

As you may have experienced, the winter blues can demotivate you and drive you off track to your physical, mental and/or spiritual goals. A major reason is that with winter comes reduced daylight hours which can lead to the condition of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is commonly due to the seasonal change between spring and autumn/winter. Common symptoms include oversleeping, tiredness/lower energy, cravings for high carbohydrate foods and even weight gain.

However, there are methods to overcome this dark cloud that may be lingering over your head. First, evidence points towards the benefits of exercise that is both rhythmic and continuous. This includes activities such as walking, preferably during daylight hours to ensure you reach your goal of enough Vitamin D for the day. A good goal to aim for is between 30-60 minutes on most days of the week, if not all days of the week. If you cannot get outdoors, other good indoor options include weight-lifting, swimming in an indoor pool, or even dancing.

Social life is also a very important element to reducing the effects of SAD. Scheduling regular social events with friends and family can help with improving mood and reducing feelings of loneliness. Psychologists recommend reconnecting with those you may have been unable to reach out to, or even make new connections where able.

Finally, focusing on nutrient rich foods will benefit you far more than short-energy foods such as sugar and simple carbohydrates in your daily diet. While an occasional treat is beneficial for the soul, definitely consider making yourself meals that are higher in Omega-3 and more complex carbohydrates during the winter months.

If you continue to struggle, you can always reach out to your local GP or Physiotherapist for assistance in locating the right resources for you.
