Pelvic Girdle Pain

Published: 05 October 2022 - Women’s Health

Are you pregnant? Are you experiencing any pain in areas around the hip, groin or low back? You may have pelvic girdle pain (PGP)

PGP is quite common during pregnancy, affecting approximately 1 in 5 pregnant women. Although PGP is a common experience, it is not a normal part of pregnancy and definitely not something you should just ‘put up with.’ PGP is especially prevalent amongst women in their third trimester of pregnancy and is due to a number of changes that occur, including:

  • Hormonal changes in pregnancy which soften the pelvic ligaments in preparation for birth
  • Increased downward pressure on your pelvis due to your growing baby
  • Postural changes due to carrying the weight of your baby

Physiotherapy can provide helpful management techniques to reduce pain and enable you to stay as active as possible for the rest of your pregnancy.
